Universa Evening at Sea

AMOR FATI: On Producing an Evening at Sea

AMOR FATI. The love of one’s fate. Nietzsche’s formula for greatness. And perhaps, the quiet edge behind successful investing.

The privilege of exceptional clients is learning from them.

The Brief

When Universa Investments came to us for their fourth annual Evening at Sea, the brief was not about florals or menus or logistics. It was about creating an environment worthy of the people who would fill it and the conversations that needed to happen there.

Universa Investments, founded by Mark Spitznagel, has built one of the most distinctive investment philosophies in the world. Their approach to tail risk hedging, rooted in the mathematics of Bernoulli’s St. Petersburg Paradox, is not a strategy for the faint of heart. It is a philosophy for those who understand that you do not control the sea. You learn how to navigate it.

Our job was to build the ship.

The Evening

Evening at Sea has grown into a defining moment of Miami Hedge Fund Week, and this year was its most ambitious iteration yet.

Aboard Miami’s iconic 280-foot SeaFair mega yacht, Universa gathered over 200 of the world’s leading institutional investors: CIOs, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, and institutional decision makers representing over $1 trillion in assets under management. These are not people who attend events. They attend the right events. The distinction matters enormously, and it shaped every decision we made.

The evening began before sunset with an intimate AI Masterclass that was oversubscribed, with a waitlist, and still not long enough for those fortunate enough to be in the room. The conversation was that good.

The centerpiece was an exclusive panel on uncertainty featuring Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Universa’s Distinguished Scientist, in conversation with Bloomberg’s Natalia Kniazhevich. Taleb, whose work on black swans and antifragility has reshaped how institutions think about risk, was characteristically unsparing, intellectually generous, and impossible to look away from.

As the sun set over Biscayne Bay, the vessel shifted. The formal program gave way to something more fluid: connection, conversation, celebration. The kind of evening that continues long after the last glass is cleared.

The Philosophy in the Room

There is a reason Universa named this event Evening at Sea and not Annual Investor Dinner or Year-End Gathering. The sea is the metaphor. It is always the metaphor.

From Bernoulli’s St. Petersburg Paradox to modern tail risk hedging, the throughline has always been the same: markets, like the ocean, are not controllable. They are navigable, but only by those willing to sit with uncertainty, to plan for the worst while others are planning only for the best.

AMOR FATI. Love your fate. Not resignation. Not passivity. A radical acceptance of uncertainty as the very condition that makes excellence possible.

The people in that room understand this not as philosophy but as practice. It shapes how they allocate capital, how they build institutions, and how they think about the future.

We understood our job was not to eliminate uncertainty from the evening. It was to create conditions in which the right conversations could unfold naturally, and in which every logistical detail was so seamlessly managed that no one ever felt the weight of the production beneath them.

What Luxe Fête Brought to This

At Luxe Fête, we begin by listening. Deeply.

Before a single vendor was called, a single layout was drawn, or a single timeline was built, we listened to what this evening needed to be and who it needed to serve. That listening shaped every decision that followed: the flow of the vessel, the sequencing of the program, the transition from intellectual rigor to elegant celebration, the invisible logistics that held everything together.

We produced every dimension of this experience. We were not a vendor brought in to execute someone else’s vision. We were partners in building it, trusted with a room full of people whose time and attention are among the most valuable in the world, and with a client whose reputation depends on getting this right, every year, without exception.

That is the standard we hold ourselves to at Luxe Fête. Not just beautiful events. Experiences equal to the people in them.

On the Privilege of This Work

I think often about why the right environment matters as much as it does.

It is not about aesthetics, though aesthetics matter. It is not about logistics, though every detail must be perfect. It is about the simple, profound truth that human beings think differently when they feel held, when the room says, without words, you are in the right place, with the right people, at the right moment.

The decisions made in rooms like the one we built aboard SeaFair that evening ripple outward in ways we may never fully see. Capital moves. Relationships form. Ideas that were nascent become commitments. Organizations shift direction.

We do not take that lightly.

They should know.

AMOR FATI.
